Bessie’s Hope

It takes a long time for a rock to become a gem.

Our society places great value on aged wine, cheese, antique furniture and even worn blue jeans. Critics acclaim the smoothness, the character, the depth that can only be obtained through a long and slow aging process. But what happens when a person in our society gets to that same point? Do we hold them up with the same sense of admiration?

Too many of our Colorado Seniors are suffering from feelings of depression, abandonment, and isolation. There are 17,000 seniors living in nursing homes in Colorado. 50% of these residents have no close relative and 46% have no living children. Over 66% of these residents receive an average of one (1) visit per year.

Bessie’s Hope, the beneficiary for 2007, works to uncover the unique beauty in the forgotten individuals living in Colorado’s nursing homes and assisted living centers. Youth, families, and businesses have the chance to look into the eyes of the elderly and discover their uniqueness, hear their stories and garner their wisdom. In return, the seniors receive companionship, intellectual stimulation, and the chance to feel needed.

The funds will go directly to the ‘Dreams Can Still Come True’ program at Bessie’s Hope. Through fulfilling the dreams of nursing home and assisted living residents, Bessie’s Hope is putting the glitter back into some of Colorado’s lost gems.
