Greenhouse Scholars

For the last eight years or so I have an annual ritual of growing my summer flowers from seed. The process begins in February and isn’t fully complete until the end of May. One of the most important steps of the process is transitioning the young plants to the outdoors to help them get adjusted before planting them in the soil. It’s called ‘hardening off’. The plants must be acclimated to the intense Colorado sun, wind and various temperature changes. Only after properly transitioning can the young plants be planted in the ground. Extra care must also be given immediately after planting until strong roots have been established. If either of these steps is skipped the plant will not flourish.

Greenhouse Scholars has a similar annual ritual. Each year they select a handful of high-performing, under-resourced students and help them succeed at college. Scholars are chosen based not only on need but also on a demonstration of certain qualities: leadership, relentlessness, accountability, and involvement in community. Once chosen, Greenhouse Scholars are not just provided financial aid but perhaps more importantly intellectual, academic and professional assistance.

No matter how strong a flower I grow indoors, it will wither if not acclimated to the outdoor and properly supported while it establishes roots. Likewise, Greenhouse Scholars is indispensable in helping today’s talented Colorado youth become tomorrow’s valuable leaders.
