When a photojournalist took this picture of a little girl in Syria, the four-year-old thought the camera was a gun and raised up her arms to surrender.

For some reason lately, I’ve been reading a lot of books about the Holocaust. Born Survivors, for example, is an extraordinary true story about three women who not only survived the Holocaust but gave birth while in captivity. It’s an amazing testament to the strength of the human spirit and the power of motherhood.

But what has haunted me most about these books is how people who were living lives very similar to my own were literally thrown into ones that I can’t even begin to fathom. The total loss of control over their situation, the horrific decisions that they faced, and the deprivation they were forced to survive seem so unreal to me. Yet … we all know that it was all too real.

Unfortunately, in many parts of the world people are still facing similar situations today. People like you and me; some educated, many professionals, some young, some old and far too many with young kids. All of them have lost total control of their lives due to a political situation that they have nothing to do with. The result is that people are faced with the unbearable decision to risk death by staying in their home or risk death by fleeing.

Currently, the world is experiencing the largest refugee crisis since World War II. Each day, 32,000 people are forcibly displaced from their homes. These are people who have found themselves living in a country that no longer offers them safety, basic necessities or any hope for their future. These are parents deciding to leave all that they own in the dark of night and risk their lives in an effort to give their children a chance at a life.

I spent this morning listening to stories from refugees around the world; Syria, North Korea, Somalia, and Cambodia to name a few. Their stories are stories of strength, courage, and survival yet their words are tinged with the weight of the experience that they have been asked to bear.

“By allowing their story to become a part of our story – together we can write a better future for all”
